The Midnight Gospel: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Wei-Huan Chen Houston Chronicle Filled with insight and otherworldly imagery, it's as close a TV show can get to emulating a good psychedelic trip. Dec 30, 2020 Full Review The Midnight Gospel: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Kambole Campbell Little White Lies For all its bright colours, base vulgarity and hyperactive spectacle, The Midnight Gospel is at once an honest, personal work, with real experiences becoming the show's narrative focus. Dec 10, 2020 Full Review The Midnight Gospel: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Sam Mossman Arizona Republic Most audiences are going to demand more structure than The Midnight Gospel has to offer. There is seldom a commitment to the animated storyline, and often the interviews just seem to trail off rather than reaching a satisfying conclusion. A Geek Community While I think that The Midnight Gospel excels in its exploration of mindfulness, meditation, and empathy, I cannot say I enjoyed it as much as others simply because I found its animation style to be distracting and not reflective enough... Rated: 8.5/10 Jan 22, 2023 Full Review The Midnight Gospel: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Korey Coleman Double Toasted I'm very captivated by this concept... I do want to sit down and watch more, but [this show] is for a very specific person. Dec 10, 2020 Full Review The Midnight Gospel: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Martin Thomas Double Toasted The more it went on, the less I was about the animation. Matter of fact, sometimes it made my stomach hurt... [But] when I was just listening to it, I was really into it. I want to keep listening to it, I just don't necessarily want to keep watching it. Abigail A this show tackled many hard subjects and has spectacular and unique animation to match. it can feel slow and i can understand if this isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but that last episode makes me cry every time. well worth a watch if you haven’t yet Rated 4.5/5 Stars • Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/15/24 Full Review ArtystaPisarz P This show is perhaps the most New Age thing I have ever watched, and let me tell you – I am not agreat fan of New Age spirituality. It took me quite a while to get back to it and finish it, as on my first try I stopped midway trough. "Midnight Gospel" can be an exhausting show to watch trough, and this is in my opinion due not only to the gravitas of themes that it attempts to tackle, but also because the narrative consisting here of real-life podcast interviews by Duncan Trussell is so disjointed from whatever happens in the animation of this particular episode. The animation itself can be brilliant and you can really see the influence and patronage of Pendleton Ward himself. Trough Clancy's eyes we get to experience here really imaginative, cool worlds and concepts that unfold themselves more and more the longer we are watching, which is really neat to experience. The otherworldliness of the animation also lulls you into a state where you almost imminently accept the otherworldliness of the interviews, which can be absolutely bonkers. Let me be honest here – I was not at all impressed by the selection of people Trussell interviewed for his podcast. His conversations with him can really be hit-or-miss, his guests are at best practitioners of religious belies that are alien and unconvincing to me personally and at worst deluded weirdos like the guy who practiced "ceremonial magic". What those people say can be rather incoherent and although there is a discernible mystical aura of deep thought in all of those interviews, none of them contain any really profound or original philosophical thoughts that will stick with me in the future, I think. This is how people who know nothing about philosophy think philosophy look like, while in reality it much more rigorous science and much less free-form, oneiric, narcotic musings of spiritual gurus and the like. And in those interviews Trussell himself presents himself as a deeply impressionable person who seems to be easily amazed by new concepts, but has little critical thought. Of course there is also his easy-going demeanor and sense of comradery that he seems to have with anyone that he speaks to. His self-insert in the show, however, Clancy, is a deeply flawed individual who never learns any true lessons about himself. On the whole, "Midnight Gospel" is passable, and can even be enjoyable at certain moments, even though the holier-than-thou act of many of Trussell's guests makes me want to stay far away from New Age (and adjacent) for long time to come. Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/14/24 Full Review Paul W Very deep talks but you have to be a good listener. Very good and creative Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/11/24 Full Review Guest U they should make another season Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/28/23 Full Review Katherine A Funny and thought provoking. Unique animation style and color pallete. This is the visual equavilant to tripping on acid while listening to a conversation podcast. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/02/23 Full Review Honest D One of the best animated shows ever made. Philosophical, thought provoking, heartfelt. The animation is top notch, a psychedelic explosion of insanity. In the rare moments that there is a lull in the dialog the animation is more then enough to carry the show and maintain interest. I just LOVE this show. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/08/23 Full Review Read all reviews
