How to Make a Harry Potter-Inspired Unicorn Blood Drink (2024)

On the list of drinks from the Wizarding world that you might want to try, I’m guessing unicorn blood isn’t particularly high on the list. After all: unicorn blood is not touted as a health tonic or magical elixir to help you do better on end-of-year exams! Despite this, I set out to make a Unicorn Blood drink that you will want to try.

Using a combination of flavors and ingredients you don’t often find together in magic potions or muggle drinks, this Unicorn Blood co*cktail can be a little deadly if you have one too many at the Hog’s Head – but it won’t cost your soul or curse you. Read on for how to make an adult muggle version of a Unicorn Blood drink.

If you’ve read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, you already know how important Unicorn Blood is in the Wizarding world. Quirrell, possessed in part by Voldemort, drinks the blood of slain unicorns to help keep his own body alive and strengthen his master.

Unfortunately, drinking Unicorn Blood is a pretty big no-no if you want to live a long, happy life:

The blood of a unicorn will keep you alive, even if you are an inch fromdeath, but at a terrible price. You have slain something pure and defenseless to save yourself, and you will have but a half-life, a cursed life, from the moment the blood touches your lips.

So while witches and wizards are generally going to avoid drinking Unicorn Blood unless they desperately need to, us Muggles can look for an alternative that’s a little less bad for our souls.

How to Make a Muggle’s Unicorn Blood co*cktail

With the idea that enjoying a Unicorn Blood drink shouldn’t cost you your life or soul, I set out to create a muggle version that tastes delicious and matches the physical description from Sorcerer’s Stone: “silvery stuff,” according to Hagrid.

This recipe features some strong, NEWT-level potioneer ingredients, so unfortunately it’s only for adult muggles, witches, and wizards. It’s best served cold – rather than unicorn-temperature, whatever that might be (now that I’ve grossed myself out!) – so make sure you have plenty of ice ready when making this one.

Let’s dive deeper into the details of this admittedly pretty simple recipe (even Neville should be able to handle this one!).

To start, you’ll need the following ingredients:

  • Tequila Blanco or Silver – I used El Jimador, which has a solid silver tequila (and I say this after passing my OWLs in tequila tasting!) as well as a Blanco version.
  • Elderflower Liqueur – The most common brand is St. Germain, though you can also find other brands (such as the St. Elder I’m using).
  • Lemon Juice –Ideally you’d have fresh lemons to squeeze, but you can use lemon juice from the store.
  • Silver co*cktail Glitter – I bought mine online at Brew Glitter, who have food-safe glitter in every color you can imagine. (You’ll see it in other co*cktail recipes soon!

Aside from the glitter, you can usually find all of these ingredients at your local grocery store.

Once you have your ingredients, collect your potion-making tools: a shot glass, shaker, and drink spoon. While I made my version by stirring (hence my mixing glass), I strongly recommend using a shaker instead. This drink needs to be diluted with the ice and tastes best when it’s cold; mixing it with ice helps the whole Unicorn Blood drink turn out better!

Once you’ve gotten everything together, combine the liquid ingredients in your shaker with 4-6 ice cubes and shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds. Then add the silver co*cktail glitter and your co*cktail spoon and stir gently to mix the glitter into your drink.

After that, all you have to do is strain your Unicorn Blood co*cktail into a new glass with ice. I recommend using an ice form to create one single, large ice cube rather than several smaller ones.

Over time, the ice will melt keeping the drink cool and creating the perfect potion!

The glitter adds a silver sheen to your whole drink, helping make it seem like you’re really drinking Unicorn Blood – without any of the cursed life or guilt over killing a defenseless creature.

The only thing I might change about my recipe next time I make it is to add in blueberry; unicorn blood is also described as “silver-blue,” and my version turned out a different color due to the lemon juice. Blueberries go well with lemon and elderflower, making this drink even more delicious. When I make it again, I’ll be sure to update this recipe and photos.
