Prevagen is a dietary supplement touted to improve brain health and function. Specifically, it is meant to help with mild memory loss associated with aging. Despite the amazing customer reviews and big promises made to customers about the efficacy of Prevagen, we are skeptical and concerned about the lawsuits against their parent company, Quincy Bioscience.
Regular and extra strength formulas
There are two types of Prevagen you can purchase. The first is a regular flavor and the other is an extra-strength mixed berries formula. The special ingredient in Prevagen is Apoaequorin, a calcium-binding-protein discovered in jellyfish, which comes in a 10 mg dose in the regular formula and a 20 mg dose in the extra strength formula. According to Quincy Bioscience it is used to support cognitive function and is both safe and clinically tested.

The other ingredients in Prevagen are listed both in the product description and on the bottle itself. The ingredients vary slightly between the two formulas, but most of them are fillers including Vitamin D, Microcrystalline Cellulose, Vegetable Capsule (Cellulose, Water), Maltodextrin, and 2% or less of Casein Peptones, Lactose, Magnesium Stearate (Vegetable Source), Modified Corn Starch, Salt, Soy Peptones and Sugar. Nowhere does it claim that this is a lactose-free, natural, plant-derived product, so if you're pregnant, nursing, or taking other medications, it's a good idea to check with your doctor before taking Prevagen.
One month supply
One bottle of Prevagen contains 30 capsules. The regular formula costs $37.95 and the extra-strength formula is $54.95 per bottle. It's recommended that users take one pill per day. The supplement qualifies for free shipping, but it is non-returnable. However, if the item arrives damaged or defective the company will give a replacement or a refund.
Ongoing lawsuit
The issues we've discovered with Prevagen and Quincy Bioscience aren't that the supplement doesn't seem to work, but rather that the company has been accused of deceptive marketing practices. In 2017, Quincy Bioscience was charged by the Federal Trade Commission and the New York Attorney General with making false and unsubstantiated claims about Prevagen and its effectiveness. As far as we see, there is no proof that Apoaequorin can enter the bloodstream and have the memory-boosting effects that it claims to. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) has posted an alert about Quincy Bioscience, but still gave them an "A+" rating at the time of this evaluation.
Questions abound
The allegations against Quincy Bioscience are slightly confusing if you read the 6,700 customer reviews about Prevagen. Overall the product has a 4.3 out of 5 star rating, meaning most people think they are being helped by using it. This could be due to a placebo effect or maybe the product is really fantastic after all. Concerningly, some people say that after taking Prevagen for a while and then getting off of it they experienced side effects of mental weariness that were much worse than before they had started, some say they had bouts of dyslexia after using Prevagen or simply felt no difference after using it.
Better choices available
The most recent reviews from customers are bad, which should deter people from using this supplement.
