Fostering sustainable entrepreneurship by business strategies: An explorative approach in the bioeconomyThe conceptual framework of bioeconomy advances sustainability by ensuring that environmental, social, and economic goals are met. Although numerous authors perceive bioeconomy as a key sector to achieve sustainable transformation, there is a lack of a comprehensive set of factors determining sustainable entrepreneurship in the bioeconomy sector. This study aims to identify factors influencing business strategies for sustainable entrepreneurship in the bioeconomy sector. This study uses the triangulation of research methods, including the entrepreneurial discovery process, as well as multiple-criteria methods of the pairwise comparison and the analytic hierarchy process. This study serves as grounds for the identification of priority factors influencing the choice of relevant business strategies in the bioeconomy. Within the framework of the research, five core factors are specified: economic-and-financial, market, technological, ecological, organization-and-human resources, and legal. The findings reveal that the most significant factors are economic-and-financial and market factors that determine the choice of innovative and offensive strategies by bioeconomy enterprises. These strategies impact entrepreneurial decision-making processes in the environmental and social areas, and they contribute to the development of more sustainable and entrepreneurial ecosystems. The verticals closed 16 and 13 deals, respectively, in 2023.""Sustainability and agrifood sectors are leading Singapore's startup ecosystem, performing strongly in funding and incorporations.In 2023, sustainability startups saw more funding events, closing 16 deals from 12 in 2022.Sustainability was also the sole vertical to record a year-on-year (YoY) increase in funding events and amounts since 2021, according to SGInnovate.Average Seed round sizes in the sector have grown by nearly 4x between 2022 and 2023. The vertical also had the most number of startups incorporated last year.Whilst agrifood startups saw a YoY dip in incorporations, longer-term data reveals that the industry "continues to produce a steady stream of new companies."From 2019 to 2023, there were 80 incorporated agrifood startups, higher than the 57 recorded between 2017 and 2021."Amongst the industry’s crop of 80 startups incorporated over the past five years, the majority (39%) have been companies involved in alternative proteins or related enabling technologies, highlighting the vibrance of Singapore’s alternative foods space," SGInnovate reported.Like the sustainability vertical, agrifood also secured more deals, with its funding events rising from eight in 2022 to 13 in 2023."Interesting. I'm thrilled to share two inspiring case studies from right here in Ukraine.Case Study 1: "Bread with Soul" - Feeding Communities, Changing LivesDespite substantial material and technical challenges stemming from Russia's war against Ukraine, the Tupychiv community in Chernihiv region stood resilient. They introduced "Bread with Soul," a social bakery offering not just bread, but also pizza and dietary options for those with specific health needs.What makes this bakery exceptional is its steadfast commitment to sustainability. Right from the outset, they embraced ecological packaging, aligning with our collective responsibility to safeguard the environment.But there's more to the story. "Bread with Soul" sparks significant social change by reimagining job creation and food security. Their visionary model aims to establish eleven bakeries in each regional community. This ensures consistent access to essential products for locals and empowers them to engage in business, fostering community unity.Case Study 2: "Vilni" - Crafting Hope, Rebuilding Lives"Vilni" is another inspiring social enterprise born amidst challenging times. Launched during the turmoil of war, it responded to the increasing unemployment among internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugee women, providing them with crucial financial support and psychological resilience.At the heart of "Vilni" are handcrafted products, including socks and scarves, thoughtfully created by women displaced and jobless due to the conflict. Each product carries a QR code, narrating the craftswoman's inspiring journey, highlighting their resilience and creativity.But "Vilni" is more than products; it's about fostering a supportive women's community, offering a safe space for communication and mutual assistance.
